Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
developed cough and cold-like symptoms about two and a half months ago. cough became severe and was non-productive. went to dr and dxd with pneumonia prescription antibiotic given some improvement, but cough persisted. over the counter meds did not help cough. back to dr-more antibiotic felt better, but cough persisted. cough became productive and it felt like a tiny thread of mucous would set me to coughing . during the past week and a half I had a fever and flu-like symptoms. cough is finally winding down. in the past, I would usually get a three day cold and that was it. my question is: what was causing the persistent cough and why so long???? thank you for any insight you can give
The most common reasons for persistent cough would be: (1) post viral cough- after a viral illness , a cough can persist. This would normally last around 6 weeks, however, when it occurs.
(2)post nasal drip-this is the most common reason for persistent coughing. Some persons are not aware of the drip itself. The use of antihistamine/decongestant combinations may help though it can take 2 to 3 weeks to take effect
(3)GERD- reflux is another common cause. Again persons may not have the typical symptoms
(4)asthma
(5)non asthmatic eosinophilic bronchitis
You may want to consider seeing your doctor to be reassessed.
Some persons have more than one cause for the persistent cough.
I hope this helps
